Mx Watson

Mx Jo Watson is a non-binary Argentinean painter whose work is deeply influenced by the aftermath of an accident they experienced at the age of two. From an early age, painting in black became a defining element of their artistic expression, shaping a bold and distinctive technique that has evolved throughout their career. Through painting, Watson revisits the accident as a timeless space within themselves—one where creation is in constant motion, inner forces merge through existence, and life can be observed from a unique perspective.

In 2000, at just eleven years old, Watson was admitted to the Sepia Group, where they trained in oil painting. This early immersion in the art world led them to exhibit their work and connect with fellow painters. By sixteen, they had developed “Automatisms”, a series of works exploring automatic drawing, influenced by the Dadaists’ automatic writing, the aesthetics of sumi-e, and their own evolving concept of life.

Watson’s career gained prominence in the year 2011 with their series “Automatic City”, which achieved record sales at Nuevos Aires, a prestigious emerging artists’ auction in Buenos Aires. By 2016, their paintings were being sold alongside those of renowned contemporary Argentinean artists. In 2017, with sponsorship from Banco Ciudad de Buenos Aires, Watson expanded Automatic City into an augmented reality experience, transforming it into an interactive exhibition. This groundbreaking work was invited to be presented in the same year in the Hall of Honor of the Buenos Aires City Legislature. Since then theit art pieces kept on being sold in the Argentinean art market stablishing their career as a contemporary local artist.

During the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, after a visit to Europe and while waiting for Argentina to reopen its borders, Watson remained in Germany. Inspired by German culture, Expressionist literature and painting and the works of Käthe Kollwitz, they developed Automatic City: Zeitgeist, a new series that continues their exploration of movement, memory, black & white and human life. This latest work was presented for the first time on September 15, 2022, at the Argentine Embassy in Germany, Berlin.
